ODH, OU Seek Input for State Health Improvement Plan

Following the release of the State Health Assessment (SHA), the Ohio Department of Health and Ohio University seek responses to a survey to identify which emerging issues should be included in the 2025-2029 State Health Improvement Plan (SHIP).

The SHA is a comprehensive and actionable picture of health and well-being in Ohio. It was developed with OU, in partnership with the Ohio Colleges of Medicine Government Resource Center and the University of Toledo. 

The survey asks participants to rank and rate issues based on the overall burden on Ohioans, population-level impact, and feasibility for improvement. Topics under consideration - which were not included in the 2020-2022 SHIP - are:

• Access to care for older Ohioans (healthcare coverage, home-based supports, caregiver supports, etc.)
• Anxiety
• Cancer
• Childhood vaccinations
• Community conditions for older Ohioans (financial stability, housing, transportation, etc.)
• Long COVID
• Culturally and linguistically appropriate care
• Food security and healthy food access
• Health literacy
• Obesity
• Oral health (preventive care, cost, dental provider shortages)
• Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)
• Syphilis
• Transportation (car access, alternative commute modes, commute time via all modes of transportation, lack of transportation as a barrier to care)
• Violence and trauma (including violent crime, neighborhood safety, school safety, bullying)
• Youth behavioral health issues

Survey responses will be aggregated and reviewed by ODH staff and the SHIP Advisory Council to guide the selection of topics to be included in the 2025-2029 SHIP.  The survey will remain open through Friday, Aug.15.
