Ninth Annual EMS Star of Life Awards Honor Ohio's Emergency Medical Services

The Ohio Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians held the ninth annual "EMS Star of Life" Awards Dinner and Ceremony on Tuesday, May 22 at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Columbus, Ohio. The annual event honors the accomplishments of EMS personnel from across the state of Ohio during EMS week. The theme of EMS Week 2007 was "Extraordinary People, Extraordinary Service." The EMS Star of Life Awards honor the dedication of those who provide the day-to-day lifesaving services of the medical "front line." The ceremony presented the actual patient scenarios and reunited the EMS caregivers with the individuals they treated. This is the premier event honoring Ohio's dedicated prehospital providers during EMS week.

The EMS Star of Life Awards Committee, with the American Heart Association, presented the "You Gotta Have Heart" Awards to honor EMS agencies and squad members who responded to cardiac incidents promptly and with exemplary professional action.

The "Mayer Glimcher Trauma Service Award," presented since 1994 to a prehospital care provider for his or her exemplary leadership and significant contributions to trauma education on behalf of ITLS Ohio was presented to Steve Shaner, EMT-P.

Thomas Long, RN, EMT-P was awarded the "Frank Giampetro Distinguished EMS Educator Award." This award, co-sponsored with Premier Health Care Services, was established to recognize a dynamic educator who has made notable contributions to the EMS system, thus improving the quality of care delivered to the citizens of Ohio.

Over 520 award winners and their families from across Ohio attended the gala awards event in Columbus. Sponsors supporting Ohio ACEP in providing this awards dinner included: University Hospitals Health System; American Heart Association; Bound Tree Medical; Emergency Medicine Physicians; Good Samaritan Hospital; Miami Valley Hospital; Premier Health Care Services; Mount Carmel West; EmergiMed, Inc.; Med Flight of Ohio; The Ohio State University Medical Center, Center for EMS; Zoll Medical; Cleveland Metro Life Flight; The Children's Medical Center of Dayton; Columbus Children's Hospital; Frank and Associates; Ohio Ambulance & Medical Transportation Association; Aultman Hospital; Canton Aultman Emergency Physicians, Inc. and Columbus Medical Association Foundation.
