Strategy for a National EMS Culture of Safety
EMS has been identified as a high-risk industry and safety impacts more than just EMS personnel. Safety in EMS affects our patients, EMS responders, and the public and includes factors such as vehicle operations, medical errors, infectious diseases, scene safety and responder health and fitness, to name just a few.
A three-year cooperative agreement between the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), with support from the Health Resources and Services Administration’s (HRSA) EMS for Children (EMSC) Program, and the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) has brought together representatives from national EMS and fire organizations to develop a national EMS “Culture of Safety” Strategy.
