Alert: Tramadol Now a Schedule IV Controlled Substance

Pursuant to a rule adopted by the United States Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), tramadol and products containing tramadol are now classified as a Schedule IV controlled substance. The new classification went into effect on August 18, 2014.

Our members may remember that the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy recently adopted its own rule that classifies tramadol as Schedule IV, which would have gone into effect on September 1, 2014. Please note: the DEA rule takes effect prior to the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy rule.

Prescribing practitioners can learn more about the new requirements from this Ohio State Board of Pharmacy release, and more information about the DEA’s rule can be found here.
