The Ohio ACEP Seventh Annual Residents' Assembly and Fifth Annual Summer Symposium were held at the Cherry Valley Lodge and CoCo Key Water Resort in Newark, Ohio on July 22 & 23, 2008. The location inspired a family-friendly event and was filled with many networking and educational opportunities. The format of the Residents' Assembly and Summer Symposium was similar to prior years with the Residents' Assembly taking place on the first day until 5:00 pm. The Summer Symposium began following the close of the Residents' Assembly and included a reception in the exhibit hall and a dinner and annual member meeting. The Summer Symposium continued through the 23rd until 1:00 pm. Keynote Speaker W. Richard Bukata, MD and ACEP President-Elect Nicholas Jouriles, MD, FACEP highlighted the speaker's list.

The Residents' Assembly program gave emergency medicine residents an opportunity to meet with experienced regional and national experts and develop an analytical and effective approach to a career in emergency medicine. Residents also had the opportunity to meet with a number of physicians and representatives from various areas of the state and the country that had positions available. The workshop also included Ohio's emergency physicians presenting a panel on practice options and discussions about interviews, the resume, contracts and risk management. Ohio ACEP would like to thank the following Residents' Assembly panelists and speakers: James Augustine, MD, FACEP, Thomas Carter, DO, Paul Culler, MD, Nicholas Jouriles, MD, FACEP, Kevin Klauer, DO, FACEP, Ryan Longstreth, MD, FACEP, John Lyman, MD, FACEP, Daniel Martin, MD, FACEP, Steven Stack, MD, FACEP and Michael Weinstock, MD.

The Annual Meeting and Summer Symposium included the election of the Ohio ACEP Board of Directors and Councillors, and two presentations by Dr. Rick Bukata: "Recent Articles that Should Change Your Practice" and "Taking Your ED from Good to Great." During the Annual Meeting Thomas W. Lukens, MD, PhD, FACEP was presented with the "Bill Hall Award for Service" to Ohio ACEP. This award is given to a member each year who best reflects the emergency physician character of Dr. William Hall, such as selfless giving of time and enthusiasm for patient care. The Summer Symposium concluded with a hands-on ultrasound workshop led by Drs. Sandy Werner and Jessica Resnick and Dr. Kevin Klauer conducted a breakout session about common ways to lose your medical license.

Throughout the two-day event the exhibit hall was crowded with 26 exhibitors/sponsors with whom the attendees could spend time with throughout the breaks and during the luncheon and reception. The conference would not have been possible without the support of the exhibitors and Ohio ACEP appreciates their involvement.

Planning for the 2009 Residents' Assembly and Summer Symposium is underway and the date and location of the conference will be posted on the Web site soon. Check back in a few weeks and don't forget to mark your calendars for this event in 2009!
