Ohio ACEP Board of Directors Candidates Announced

At the Annual Meeting during the Ohio ACEP Summer Symposium at the Kalahari Resort on July 26, Ohio ACEP Board members shall be elected by ballot by majority vote of the Chapter membership present. Board members shall serve for three years or until their successors are elected with approximately one third of the members being elected every year. Board members have no term limits and may run for consecutive terms. Their terms of office shall begin at the close of the Annual Meeting at which they are elected. There are four seats available in 2007 for three year terms. Candidate CV's are available at the chapter office upon request and will be available in printed candidate material at the Annual Meeting. Nominations will also be accepted from the floor during the Annual Meeting. Announced by Leadership Development Committee Chair, Mary Hancock, MD, FACEP, the five declared candidates include, in alphabetical order:

C.C. Halloran, MD
Attending Physician
University Hospitals Case Medical Center
Cleveland, Ohio

Dr. Halloran will bring a unique perspective and extensive leadership experience to the Ohio ACEP Board. She has been an active member of ACEP and EMRA since 1999 and is currently completing her term on the EMRA Board of Directors as Secretary and Editor of EM Resident. Her experience in resident leadership and as a junior attending will help the Chapter and the Board understand and better meet the needs of young physicians. As ACEP and its chapters struggle to recruit this group of emergency physicians, Dr. Halloran is poised to bring insight and solutions to this problem. She looks forward to bringing her experience as a Board member, her knowledge of the issues of young physicians, and her passion for emergency medicine to Ohio ACEP.

James M. Horn, MD
Emergency Physician Mercy Fairfield Hospital
Staff Physician, Mercy Mason
Mason, Ohio

Since becoming an active member of Ohio ACEP in 2006, Dr. Horn has demonstrated his readiness to work on issues affecting emergency medicine by being involved with the reimbursement committee. Dr. Horn's residency at University of Cincinnati afforded him opportunity to explore his interests in medical student and EMS education and research. He has recently been working with Ohio ACEP member Dave Chauvin, DO, in the billing and compliance arena, and learning about active involvement in the administrative, planning and political issues regarding emergency medicine. Dr. Horn is anxious to bring his energy and enthusiasm to Ohio ACEP by participating in the Leadership and Advocacy conference in DC this spring and through leadership service on the board of directors.

Gary Katz, MD, MBA, FACEP
Assistant Professor
Department of Emergency Medicine
The Ohio State University

Dr. Katz brings experience in both organized medicine and state politics. He currently serves as Chairman of the American Medical Association's Young Physicians Section. There, he leads efforts that incorporate the unique needs of early career physicians with the widespread complexities that all physicians must address in our national health care system. He has experience serving national ACEP as a 4-year member of the Section Council for Emergency Medicine, is a trustee of the Ohio ACEP Political Action Committee, and was a senior advisor for health care policy to John Patrick Carney (candidate for Ohio House District 22).

Dr. Katz believes we must continue our effort to assure that long-term solutions to health care problems are found and executed; Access to Care, Marketplace Sustainability, and Legal System Reform are some common problems to address. However, our recent advocacy successes are only as secure as the persistence of our voice. At a time when membership driven organizations are struggling to compete for increasingly limited membership dollars, an ever-present challenge remains to assure that the value proposition we offer our members remains competitive so our chapter remains strong.

Akhil Saklecha, MD, FACEP
Chair, Department of Emergency Medicine
Aultman Hospital
Canton, Ohio

Dr. Saklecha is currently finishing his first three year term on the Ohio Chapter ACEP Board of Directors. In that time period, he has been an active member of the Board and served on the Summer Symposium Planning Committee, as a member of the Ohio ACEP PAC, and he is currently Ohio ACEP's representative on the Ohio Stroke Council. He serves on the EMS committee, Reimbursement committee, and Education committee for Ohio ACEP. He has been both a Councillor and Alternate Councillor for Ohio ACEP, as well as serving on national ACEP's Quality and Performance Committee. He has also recently served on ACEP's task force for the creation of its inaugural Quality Course for Emergency Medicine. Dr. Saklecha is a member of the ACEP Sections on Quality Improvement/Patient Safety and Emergency Medicine Practice Management. Dr. Saklecha currently lives in the Akron area and is Chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Aultman Hospital and President of Canton Aultman Emergency Physicians, Inc. Dr. Saklecha looks forward to continuing his commitment to emergency medicine, and to expanding his involvement within the Chapter.

Thomas A. Tallman, DO, FACEP
Associate Staff Physician in Emergency Medicine
Cleveland Clinic Foundation
Cleveland, Ohio

Dr. Tallman has indicated interest in serving the Ohio ACEP Chapter as a Board member. Seven years ago, Dr. Tallman transitioned from his last active duty role as Director of Military and Emergency Medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Services. He currently serves as associate staff physician in the Emergency Department at the Cleveland Clinic. His interests include disaster medicine and event medicine, including his current service as co-director for the CCF Event Medicine program, providing care for spectators and fans at Cleveland Brown's Stadium, Jacobs Field and Gund Arena. Event Medicine efforts also include and annual conference held in Cleveland to present current concepts in disaster management and experienced health care professionals who "cover the crowds" on a regular basis. He also currently serves as the Disaster Coordinator for the Cleveland Clinic Department of Emergency Medicine and is credentialed as an instructor for Basic and Advanced Disaster Life Support courses in the Cleveland area.

Another area of interest is Maritime or Cruise Ship Medicine; an interest which evolved from previous experience while serving in the Navy and with current efforts to work with the Cleveland Clinic to establish a working relationship with the specialized and privately owned ship known as The World. Such a working relationship would include ongoing medical direction and a working platform for virtual or telemedicine 24/7. Previously an active member in the government services ACEP, Dr. Tallman is now an Ohio Chapter member and is pleased to put forth his interest and commitment to serving the Chapter. One suggestion would be to provide basic and advanced life support training for Ohio ACEP members on a fixed schedule and with provision for certification.
