Ohio ACEP Councillor Candidates
Councillor Elections:
Councillors will be elected by ballot by majority vote of the Chapter membership at the Chapter's 2019 Annual Meeting, the Ohio ACEP EM Assembly. ACEP Council is the deliberative and representative body that meets once a year for two days prior to the College’s annual Scientific Assembly (ACEP's 2019 Scientific Assembly—ACEP19—will be held in Denver, CO). The Council votes on resolutions, elects members to the National ACEP Board of Directors, and ensures grassroots involvement in the democratic decision-making process.
8 Councillors will be elected by Ohio ACEP membership to serve a two-year term. All current Councillors with expiring terms are eligible for re-nomination and re-election.
Candidates:
Eileen F. Baker, MD, PhD, FACEP—Incumbent
Dr. Eileen Baker grew up in Santa Rosa, California, and received her Bachelors of Arts and Sciences from the University of California, Davis. She graduated from the University of Vermont College of Medicine and completed her residency in emergency medicine at Summa Health System in Akron, Ohio. She has worked as a community emergency physician since 2001 and moved to Bowling Green, Ohio, to pursue her PhD in Applied Philosophy at Bowling Green State University. In addition to clinical duties at four emergency departments in Northwest Ohio, Dr. Baker teaches Medical Ethics at the University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences.
She has been an active member of the American College of Emergency Physicians since medical school, serving National ACEP on the Continuing Education, EMS, Reference, and Tellers Committees. She has served on ACEP’s Ethics Committee since 2009. With Ohio ACEP, Dr. Baker has co-chaired the EMS Committee and has served as Secretary, President-Elect, President, and Past-President. Currently, she is a member of the Ohio ACEP Board, and she has served as a Councillor for Ohio ACEP since 2004.
Dr. Baker describes her years serving Ohio ACEP and its members as some of the most rewarding of her career. Dr. Baker believes the experience she brings to ACEP Council allows her to provide insight into the important issues debated at this forum each year, and she asks for your support to continue to serve as Councillor.
Dan Breece, DO, FACEP—Incumbent
Dr. Dan Breece serves as the Vice President of Physician Services and Chief Medical Officer for Memorial Health System. He is currently an Ohio ACEP Board member and has served as a Councillor for Ohio ACEP for four years. He previously served as the President of the Medical Staff for Marietta Memorial and Selby General Hospitals and as the Medical Director for Emergency and Urgent Care Services for Memorial Health System. In addition, Dr. Breece also served as a Core Faculty Member for Marietta Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Medicine Residency Program as well as the EMS Medical Director for Washington and Monroe Counties. Dr. Breece also served in the United States Navy for twelve years.
In addition to his above leadership positions, Dr. Breece is also a clinical instructor for Marietta College Physician Assistant Program. He is currently championing the Patient and Provider Experience journey as well as serving as the Physician Lead for Quality and Performance Excellence for his Health System. He has served as a member on the Ohio ACEP Government Affairs Committee and the Residents’ Assembly Planning Committee where he also has served as faculty.
These experiences continue to strengthen Dr. Breece as a leader. His desire is to continue to serve as an Ohio ACEP Chapter Councillor in order to represent the interests of the members of Ohio ACEP.
Christina Campana, DO, FACEP
Dr. Christina Campana currently serves as Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED), and is a board-certified physician and core faculty member for the Emergency Medicine Residency at Cleveland Clinic-Akron General in Akron, Ohio. She is also the EMS Medical Director for Coventry Fire Department in Summit County.
In addition to the above leadership roles, she is a graduate of Ohio ACEP’s 2018 Leadership Development Academy class and has served as an Ohio ACEP Chapter Alternate Councillor since 2017. She has been an ACEP and Ohio ACEP member since 2009 when she began her residency at Akron General.
Dr. Campana has been active in education and research and has several publications in peer-reviewed journals in emergency medicine. She has been involved in government affairs with Ohio ACEP, working with the Chapter through the Leadership Development Academy to educate legislators locally and on Capitol Hill. She is committed to advocating for high-quality emergency medicine on both a state and national level and for patients and physicians in defining the future of emergency medicine.
John Casey, DO, MA, FACEP—Incumbent
Dr. John Casey currently serves as the Associate Residency Program Director at OhioHealth Doctors Hospital, a community academic site. He has significant experience as a member of the ACEP Federal Government Affairs Committee and has served on the Board of the American Osteopathic Association.
The next few years in Ohio will be critical in regard to legislation impacting physician practice, and Dr. Casey wants to contribute back to Ohio ACEP for being so supportive of him during residency and his early years in practice. Dr. Casey brings a strong voice representing emergency physicians with legislators and policy leaders, having a long history of political advocacy including being named as a Champion of Change for Healthcare by President Obama. His experience as hospital Chief of Staff allowed Dr. Casey to develop the skillset to effectively communicate with hospital leaders and the medical staff from all specialties. In that position, it was Dr. Casey’s responsibility to address practice right concerns with non-physician providers and identify solutions for ED boarding.
Dr. Casey says he understands the challenges of daily EM practice with continued shrinking resources; EMTALA implications and unintended consequences; the ongoing opioid epidemic; and academic concerns with residency programs. Dr. Casey also cites his strong working knowledge of EMS issues. Dr. Casey is eager to use this varied skillset in service to his emergency medicine colleagues.
Dr. Casey is running to serve on the Ohio ACEP Board of Directors and to continue serving as a Councillor because activity at the state chapter level affords the opportunity to advance emergency medicine while supporting his colleagues at the local, regional, state, and national level.
Tyler L. Hill, DO
From August 2014 to August 2015, Dr. Tyler Hill served as the Resident Representative to the Ohio ACEP Board. During that year, Dr. Hill gained valuable insight into the importance of the work performed at both the state and national levels by the Ohio Chapter. Dr. Hill considers himself as standing amongst the giants of emergency medicine when he thinks about his involvement with Ohio ACEP. Dr. Dan Breece, current Ohio ACEP Board member, has been a mentor to Dr. Hill throughout his career. Dr. Hill says he is grateful to those involved with Ohio ACEP who have paved the way for EM physicians like himself to practice medicine in the most influential specialty in healthcare.
As Dr. Hill’s career continues to advance in emergency medicine leadership, he feels strongly that now is the time to re-introduce himself to the Ohio ACEP leadership team by running for Councillor. Since completing his residency in 2016, he has been advancing his leadership experience at a local level. He spent nearly 2 years as the Medical Director of the emergency department at Jackson General Hospital in Ripley, West Virginia. During that time, Dr. Hill says the department saw incredible success. The hospital’s Left Without Being Seen rate dropped from 5% to less than 1%. In the process, the hospital significantly improved all of their ED metrics. During this time, Dr. Hill completed all 4 phases of the prestigious Emergency Department Directors Academy. In November 2018, Dr. Hill became the Director of the Emergency and Urgent Care Services for the Memorial Health System in Marietta, Ohio.
Dr. Hill considers it an extreme honor to run for Ohio Chapter Councillor, and he feels strongly that he has much to add to Ohio ACEP both now and in the future.
Catherine A. Marco, MD, FACEP—Incumbent
Dr. Catherine A. Marco currently serves as Professor of Emergency Medicine at Wright State University and is an attending physician at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio.
Dr. Marco has served as a Councillor representing the Ohio Chapter since 2004, sat on the Ohio ACEP Board of Directors from 2001 to 2012, and was Chapter President from 2006 to 2007. She has been a member of the National ACEP Ethics Committee since 1997 and chaired the Committee from 2011 to 2013.
Dr. Marco has been active in the education, research, and writing arenas. She has published numerous research manuscripts and book chapters on medical ethics, resuscitation, dermatology, airway, and pain management.
Dr. Marco would be pleased to continue to represent and support Ohio emergency medicine physicians as a Councillor on the American College of Emergency Physicians Council.
Daniel R. Martin, MD, MBA, FACEP—Incumbent
Dr. Daniel Martin is Professor and Vice Chair of Education at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. He is the former Program Director of the Categorical Emergency Medicine Residency Program (1990-2010) and current Program Director of the Emergency Medicine Internal Medicine Combined Residency (2013-2017). Some of Dr. Martin’s major clinical and education interests include patient experience, cognitive errors, faculty development, and leadership. Dr. Martin completed his undergraduate and medical school education at Indiana University. He completed a residency program in internal medicine at the University of Iowa from 1983 to 1986 and emergency medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin from 1986 to 1988 before joining the faculty at The Ohio State University in 1988. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1994 and to Full Professor in 2008.
Having served on the ACEP Council for over 20 years, Dr. Martin understands the interests of a number of unique groups, such as academic EM physicians, resident physicians, medical students, and also the many attending physicians throughout Ohio whom Dr. Martin has helped to educate. Being the consummate learner, Dr. Martin completed an Executive MBA program in May of 2016. Dr. Martin feels these experiences—along with his passion for immersing himself in policy proposals and advocacy issues—make him well-qualified to continue representing the interests of Ohio emergency physicians on the ACEP Council.
As a Councillor, Dr. Martin says he takes representing Ohio emergency physicians very seriously and feels strongly that high-level engagement and being a great team player are vital attributes to maximizing this role. Dr. Martin is extremely thankful for being able to serve and is humbled by the opportunity to represent EM physicians in Ohio.
Michael J. McCrea, MD, FACEP—Incumbent
Dr. McCrea has been an ACEP member since 2004 when he began his residency at The Ohio State University. After finishing residency in 2007, he joined a large community practice in Mansfield, Ohio with EMP and served as Quality Director. He continued to practice in Mansfield with Premier Health Care Services, serving as Assistant Medical Director. In 2009 he joined the Emergency Medicine Residency faculty at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo, becoming the program’s Director of Simulation Education, and has served as Assistant Program Director since 2013.
He is an alumnus of National ACEP’s Teaching Fellowship and Ohio ACEP’s Leadership Development Academy. For the past eight years he has served on Ohio ACEP’s Board of Directors and served as President of the Chapter from 2015 to 2017. He has been extremely active with Ohio ACEP’s educational programs, including lecturing at the Emergency Medicine Board Review Course; serving as a faculty examiner and course Co-Director at the Oral Board Review Course; has edited chapters for Ohio ACEP’s Dr. Carol Rivers’ Written Board and Oral Board Review books; and reviewed articles for the LLSA Review Course. He has represented Ohio ACEP as an Alternate Councillor or Councillor for the past nine years and served on the ACEP Council Steering Committee, Council Reference Committee, and Tellers, Election, and Credentials Committee. Dr. McCrea also sits on the National ACEP State Legislative-Regulatory Committee and the Bylaws Committee.
Matthew J. Sanders, DO, FACEP
Dr. Matthew Sanders is the Medical Director of the Emergency Department at Highland District Hospital in Hillsboro, Ohio. He is employed by Community Emergency Medicine Partners, where he also works at Fayette County Memorial Hospital in Washington Court House, Ohio. Dr. Sanders has practiced community emergency medicine since completing his emergency medicine residency at The Ohio State University Medical Center in 2004. He previously served as an Assistant Medical Director at the Emergency Trauma Center at Atrium Medical Center in Middletown, Ohio. He has also been involved in the teaching of emergency medicine to OSU medical students who rotated through the Emergency Department at Memorial Hospital of Union County, in Marysville, Ohio.
Dr. Sanders has served as a member of the Ohio ACEP Board of Directors from 2012 to present. He is a former Chairman/co-Chairman of the Ohio ACEP Government Affairs Committee. He has been an ACEP member since 2001 and became an ACEP Fellow in 2011. He is a graduate of the 2011-2012 Ohio ACEP Leadership Development Academy. Dr. Sanders has also participated in local and state advocacy in the fight against prescription drug abuse by representing his former group at the Central Ohio Emergency Department Workgroup and representing Ohio ACEP at the Governor’s Cabinet Opiate Action Team—Emergency Department Guidelines Committee.
Dr. Sanders has served as an ACEP Councillor from 2012-2017, and as an Alternate Councillor in 2011 and 2018. He has served on the Tellers Credential and Elections Committee at ACEP Council from 2015 through 2018. He is also currently serving national ACEP on the State Legislative and Regulatory Committee.
Dr. Sanders asks for your vote to continue to serve the members of Ohio ACEP as a Councillor. He would like to be a voice for under-represented southwest Ohio. He hopes he can make a difference on issues such as psychiatric boarding, opiate abuse, and fair reimbursement. He wishes to continue to represent Ohio ACEP at Council by supporting its candidates, resolutions, and interests.
John R. Queen, MD, FACEP—Incumbent
Dr. John Queen has been both an ACEP and Ohio ACEP member since 1999 and has served the Ohio Chapter as a Board member since 2011 and as a member of the Medical Education Advisory Committee since 2008. Dr. Queen also currently serves as Chapter President. One of Dr. Queen’s greatest passions is for education of the future physicians in emergency medicine. An established leader in emergency medicine resident education, Dr. Queen has served as an Assistant Residency Program Director since 2003 and as the Course Director and Co-Director of the Ohio ACEP Oral Board Review Course since 2008. Dr. Queen’s greatest honor was winning the 2006 Teacher of the Year Award at Cleveland Clinic for his work with the emergency medicine residents.
Dr. Queen has also lectured multiple times for the Ohio ACEP Emergency Medicine Board Review Course. He has lectured and taught nationally multiple times and has several publications in peer-reviewed journals as first author. Most recently he has published a 2019 review of cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome online with co-author, Dr. Saurin Bhatt, for Current Emergency and Hospital Medicine Reports. Dr. Queen hopes to continue to be able to serve the Chapter with enthusiasm and insight through another two-year term as Councillor.
